Lithuanian Economist Gediminas Rainys Dies

Economist and social sciences scholar Gediminas Rainys, a long-serving public official and representative of Lithuania’s business community, has died. Most recently, he worked as an economic affairs adviser to the Association of Lithuanian Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Crafts.

The business community remembered Rainys as a professional who helped prepare proposals to improve business conditions and strengthen dialogue between companies and public institutions. His work covered economic policy, competitiveness, the business environment and efforts to balance economic and social interests.

Zigmantas Dargevičius, president of the Kaunas Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Crafts, said Rainys made an especially significant contribution by representing Lithuanian businesses, raising important economic and social issues and submitting constructive proposals.

“Gediminas Rainys was a professional, insightful and responsible person whose opinion was valued by both the business community and state institutions,” Dargevičius said.

Rainys’s career covered a period in which Lithuania developed and revised policies on business regulation, economic growth and competitiveness. Throughout that work, he pursued better conditions for the national economy, substantive dialogue between institutions and decisions that reconciled economic and social interests.

Colleagues said his professionalism, sense of responsibility, perseverance, accumulated experience and respect for others would remain in the memory of the wider business community. They also recalled his concern for Lithuania’s economic future and his view of public service as a responsibility to society.
