‘Will Rise For Vande Mataram, But Won’t Sing’: Congress MP Imran Masood Amid Sonia Gandhi Row
Congress MP Imran Masood said he respects the national song Vande Mataram but will not sing it, citing his constitutional right to practise his religion. Amid the ongoing row involving Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, Masood said he would stand when Vande Mataram is recited but would not sing it. He said he had never sung the song and would not do so in future, while stressing that he would not insult it. Masood also urged people to read the complete history of Vande Mataram, including its origins and how it was written. His remarks came after the BJP lodged a complaint against Sonia Gandhi over the controversy. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had accused Sonia of asking Congress leaders to stop the rendition, an allegation she denied, saying she was asking for a chair for Kharge. This year’s Independence Day marked the first formal full rendition of Vande Mataram.
