NEED TO KNOW

President Trump’s approval rating is at the lowest level of his presidency, with some 80% of Americans expecting the U.S. war with Iran to last a long time, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll. Here’s the latest.

The data: Just 33% of respondents said they approved of Trump’s performance, down from 35%, ‌while 64% disapproved. The president’s popularity declined earlier this year after the U.S. and Israel carried out strikes on Iran, triggering the paralysis of the Strait of Hormuz and a surge in the price of oil. In the Middle East: A 60-day window for an Iran-U.S. peace deal ended without an agreement. Trump reportedly warned Oman it could face military action if it impedes U.S. efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s Foreign Ministry said Tehran had reached an agreement with Oman regarding shipping routes in the Strait. [CBS News]

In Asia: South Korean President Lee Jae Myung responded to Trump’s surprise order to “substantially reduce” joint military exercises, calling for a solid alliance with the U.S. The move may have been a U.S. effort to reach out to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who has shunned talks since 2019.
