Latvian volunteer soldier Vitālijs Šampiņš, nicknamed “Vilks” (“Wolf”), has been killed on the Kharkiv front in Ukraine, Latvian Television reports.
Latvian Ambassador to Ukraine Andrejs Pildegovičs confirmed the news of 43-year-old Šampiņš’ death in a conversation with Latvian Radio.
“Yesterday, our embassy in Kyiv received information from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence that on August 18th, a Latvian citizen, Latvian volunteer Vitalijs Šampiņš, was killed,” said Pildegovičs.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has informed Šampiņš’ relatives of his death. Pildegovičs said that this is the fifth volunteer soldier from Latvia to have been killed in Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
Our condolences to Vitālijs’ friends and family.
