U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is discussing a possible
2028 presidential run, though the Pentagon denies he has such plans. NBC News reported on Aug. 29.
The outlet reported that Hegseth had discussed the
possibility with close associates and allies. His recent visit to Iowa, where
he campaigned for Republican Zach Nunn ahead of a congressional special
election, drew additional attention to his political plans. NBC News
highlighted Iowa’s importance in U.S. presidential races because the state
traditionally holds one of the first contests in the party nomination process.
The Pentagon, however, denied that Hegseth had such plans,
calling the report “baseless” and saying his main focus remains leading the
department. Hegseth himself also rejected
the NBC News report, calling it “completely false” and accusing the outlet of
relying on anonymous sources.
A Hegseth candidacy could pit him against Vice President JD
Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who are viewed as potential
Republican contenders in the 2028 presidential election, NBC News added. His
candidacy could also draw criticism over his tenure as defense secretary,
including the situation surrounding the war with Iran and last year’s Signalgate
scandal.
Some supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump back a
Hegseth candidacy, although they stress that he would need to demonstrate
results as head of the Pentagon.
On May 4, 2025, Trump named JD Vance and Marco Rubio among
those who could succeed him as leader of the Republican Party and take
responsibility for the MAGA brand.
Trump also said there were as many as 20 Republicans who
could emerge as leaders in 2028.
