Protesters clash with police in Serbia, claiming rigged elections | DW News

Well dozens of protesters have been arrested after clashes with Riot police in Serbia’s Capital Belgrade officers fired tear gas at the crowd as they attempted to storm the city hall they accused the ruling party of rigging the country’s elections earlier this month rallies like this one have become

A daily occurrence in Belgrade since the country’s parliamentary and local elections on December the 17th the demonstrators accuse president Alexander vuic and his ruling right-wing Serbian Progressive Party of rigging the vote the only thing that this state had to provide to its citizens was to freely elect the ones who will lead the

Country but they stole the elections V you guys stole not one but thousands and thousands of votes teit is among a handful of opposition leaders on a hunger strike who say they won’t stop until the results are annulled Riot police moved in after demonstrators tried to storm Belgrade city hall barricading themselves inside

The building while some continued pelting it with stones and eggs police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd and arrested dozens of demonstrators in a televised address during the protest the president accused the opposition of trying to destabilize the country the people who vowed to fight violence confirmed once again that they

Are the real thugs and that they want to destroy our cities Villages houses above all our country we will not allow them to destroy our country he also suggested the unrest was instigated from abroad although vuich was not person personally on the ballot for the Parliamentary and local

Elections the vote was largely seen as a referendum on his government according to official results his party won a majority of the seats in Parliament with just over 46% of the vote International observers noted several irregularities in the snap elections including instances of vote buying Ballot Box

Stuffing and the busing in of Voters to support the ruling party in local ctions we can speak now to DW correspondent idro saeri who’s following the story for us from Novi pazar about 270 kilometers south of Belgrade idro welcome the opposition and protesters want these elections and nowed How likely is

That well it’s not easy for the opposition to get uh the government uh to uh make the elections happen again as the officials including the Prime Minister Anna babich and president Alexander vuic stated that the elections in Serbia were absolutely regular and that uh what opposition is claiming not

True although we know that uh the international uh observing missions uh said uh totally differently they stated that this uh elections had a lot of irregularities and they cannot talk about uh normal Democratic elections but they tried last night with the protests as we uh could see and the protests are

Going on uh also today uh they started at 11:00 with students unions Gathering all around Belgrade and they probably will uh go on uh next days also we can see some of these uh protests this Gathering taking place uh right now in Belgrade uh you mentioned a key figure

In this President Alexander vuic what’s his party’s plan now and his plan well uh his plan is to go on with the results and certificate them uh the uh uh Election Commission in Serbia uh joined his statement saying that uh everything was uh fine and they can see

If they have no uh uh partner to make the Coalition in Belgrade as which is party also didn’t win the majority they will repeat uh elections in Belgrade but this uh is no guarantee uh although the the statements uh suggest that uh it could be the opposition it’s uh asking

For uh uh the elections to repeat as they accused uh the government all the time that they brought voters who don’t live in Belgrade from uh bosnan and heroa to vote uh actually in the uh city city elections uh and that they uh uh sort of overed with it doing having more

Voters that were not registered there uh and that’s how they won elections otherwise it would be this a chance for the opposition idro just quickly if you can International election observers say they were electoral irregularities Western countries want Alexander vuic to urgently address these concerns how exactly is he reacting to these calls

From Western countries well he accused uh particularly as he said one of the strongest States in European Union for uh being part of uh trying to uh interfere in elections in Serbia all the pro government media uh allegedly said that they are talking about Germany and The Observers that came uh from Germany

But uh Alexander vuch met this morning uh the Russian pres uh the Russian Ambassador uh to Serbia which strongly supported the government and I think the EU is scared uh because Serbia could go slightly more closer to Moscow idro safery in Nova Pasa Serbia thanks idro

  1. Ok, listen to this irony, the party called "Serbia against violence" is trying to come to power with violence for the second day in a row, after they lost in a democratic way, that is, in the elections. I love being a Serb.

  2. If western favorite wins then there's no questions about it. Otherwise push for protests and blame it on rigged elections. An old trick which by now majority of Serbs and people in the world are aware of. New realities are here however., west is losing its hegemony and control EVERYWHERE! People are awakening.. God bless Serbia! 🇷🇸

  3. So Jan 6'th was wrong, but this is 'democracy' at work. I guess rules based order has different rules for different people. They keep talking about ballot stuffing but have no video proof, how convenient. Guess what, Russia became so much more attractive to the Serbs, who still remember how NATO carved chunks out of Yugoslavia to reward the Croats and Bosniacs for their service to the Third Reich.

  4. Imagine being so afraid of losing your grip on power that you don’t even have free and open elections? If you’re the best choice for the country then the people I’m sure will think so too…

  5. Dear Serbian brothers, don’t let them fool you ! Have a look at the Ukraine! They followed West advices and where they are? If u want changes use peaceful ways….and better join Russian Federation and become strongest orthodox country in the world which never betrays you!

  6. it is necessary to expand the European Union to include the Western Bałkans, Ukraine, Mołdova, Georgia, secular Turkey, and in the future also to include free democratic Belarus, and also Armenia, and perhaps Azerbaijan. It is necessary to admit these countries to the European Union…

  7. Love from russia 🇷🇺 for my serbian brothers. Stay strong, soon you’ll have a free russia supporting you.

  8. A protest for transparent and effective democracy to which I give my full support as it fits in with EU values. Go Serbs, fight for your country.

  9. Breaking news! Russia has admitted to sending intelligence to Serbia to manipulate the Serbian government!

  10. Any government that doesn't follow the dictates of the West is labelled DICTATOR and FAR RIGHT and a sponsored regime change campaigns are waged against you through the media in concert with pseudo civil society organisations

  11. Serbs knows that Germany and rest of the west work hard to destabilize Serbia and Republic of Serpska,
Elections in Serbia was transparent and fair. Germany and EU are last who have moral or any authority over anything . We Serbs are able to defend our democracy as independent state and you Germans know that well. Alexandar Vucic does not need to act like Alexandar Lukashenko at list for now.

  12. There were no irregularities in the election. The opposition got only 23% of the vote, but they are payed through the non-goverment organisations to promote violence on the streets. The funny thing is that their coalition is called "Serbia without violence". And at peek of the protests there were no more than 3k people on the protests. So there will be no "Maidan" in Serbia, sorry to everyone that were hoping for that. This will all quiet down in a couple of days. Truth be told our police exercised tolerance to the fullest, only when the "protesters" tried to forcefully enter the city hall have they responded with controlled force

  13. Color revolution time, the west throwing their toys out the prem after an election that did not ho there way, trying to do another Ukraine, what psychopaths!

  14. Since you accept and encourage Palestinian demonstrations and protests! We should also accept and encourage demonstrations and protests in Serbia!
