Japan braces for more tremors after powerful earthquake | DW News
Japan is bracing for more aftershocks after a series of powerful earthquakes triggered the highest level tsunami warning officials say the threat of a major tsunami is passed for now but warned that more Tremors could follow at least four people have been reported dead dozens of earthquakes shook Japan’s West Coast hitting the Ishikawa
Prefecture the strongest had a magnitude of 7.6 more than 30,000 homes were left without power but the government says nuclear power plants were not affected the Army was called in to help with rescue operations and nearly 100,000 people were ordered to evacuate customers inside this department store in ishwa panic and try
To take shelter as the Tremors Hit hundreds of people were evacuated from a subway Station as inside the ceiling started shaking nearby residents recorded the effects of the earthquake from inside their homes and large fires broke out in some Neighborhoods Japan’s meteorological agency recorded multiple Quakes off the western coast one of them had a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 they then issued the highest tsunami warning possible isue this is the first major Tsunami alert since the earthquake that occurred in the Pacific Ocean on March the 11th 2011 with the Fukushima nuclear disaster
Still all too clear in people’s minds the government says that so far none of the nearby nuclear power plants have been affected David br’s a professor for geosciences at the open University in Milton keing England after more than 50 Quakes today what’s the possibility of another strong
One well it’s unlikely the the second earthquake today was the biggest one magnitude 7.6 and all the others have been smaller been over 30 but were more than magnitude four uh and I expect that will get fewer and smaller in magnitude but in 2011 the big earthquake um that
Caused a really devastating tsunami that took out the Fukushima power plant that you mentioned that was preceded two days previously by magnitude 7 Quake then some smaller aftershocks and then the magnitude 9 hit so things could turn really nasty it’s very unlikely it’s very unusual for that to happen but the
Danger of more earthquakes is not passed but it sounds like Japan’s on top of things at least at the moment I mean uh for dead after so many earthquakes and such a strong one um what’s Japan doing right well what Japan is doing right is is building buildings which are
Resilient which don’t collapse very easily in an earthquake and Japanese people know how to behave the videos that you showed of people inside Department Source did not show them running outside as soon as the earthquake stroke you should stay inside get under a table if you can and hang on
And keep undercover indoors until the shaking is finished if you run outside you’re liable to be hit on the head by something falling um from above so you stay inside until the shaking finishes Japanese people know to do that and they also would have heed the evacuation
Warnings as it happens I don’t think any of the tsunamis really came very far in land at all they will beat will be some damage to some Harbor infrastructures but they didn’t overtop the seaw walls and rush through city streets such as happened uh in 2011 so there are not
Tsunami deaths to be feared in Japan the tsunami threat as you rightly said has gone unless it’s a really really big earthquake which as I have said is now unlikely okay and um what else can others learn from Japan what about its early warning systems for example they
They seem to be streets ahead of others well yeah they are pretty good I mean they stopped the U the bullet trains as soon as they’ had the first signs thing about earthquakes is that the the waves that do the damage of the waves that travel along the surface but they arrive
After the waves that travel through the body of the earth now there’s not much difference in the time of arrival when you’re so close to the epicenter but even a few seconds lets you set traffic lights to red and tell the trains to stop so things like that were done
Before the big ground shaking began so that certainly helped uh but but just having a a seismic building code and enforcing it not letting corrupt people look the other way when buildings are being built exactly enforcing it is one of the big things isn’t it I’m sorry enforcing it is is one of
The big things because you hear about many countries taking on these codes but not enforcing them well that was a problem in in turkey and well turkey has a seismic building Syria’s pretty anarchic but the earthquake which hit turkey and Syria in February last year those buildings
Should have been uh Better Built and they weren’t you’re able in Turkey you’re able to pay a seismic exemption tax for local authorities which it excuses you for from building to proper safety standards I don’t think that happens in Japan that’s one thing Japan does right okay David thank you very
Much for the insights really interesting stuff

It's reported that Cthulu and Captain Nemo were playing cards yesterday for new years….
Terrifying! Poor people! Hoping it will all calm down…
TRUMP 2024🎉🎉🎉
This is disinformation there will be aftershocks of lessening degree for months not actual quakes.
Streets ahead!? Did i hear that right?
Fortunately, we're not in Japan, a country that unfortunately experiences frequent natural disasters.
Massive solar flare happened only hours before this – as always!
God Save japan….. 🙏🙏
There will be at least 100s more afterquakes with half the magnitude the coming days. Another news channel showed a table chart about it.
Birth pangs.
One would hardly call this panic.
so far the confirmed death toll is only 4. may they rest in peace and condolences to their families, no disrespect to them but at the same time it is amazing that an earthquake that powerful has that few casualties. it is a testament to the amazing preparedness the Japanese people have when it comes to natural disasters. I pray for no more natural disasters for Japan in this new year.
Not our problem.
🙏
go to my channel, read description and watch video dated 12.24.2023 earthquake alert. PEACE.
What happened on the other side of the ocean?
China's 2023 GDP is expected to grow by an optimistic 7.5%, with an actual GDP growth of 5% for the whole year! A decrease of 2.5%! The Chinese economy has shown signs of severe recession! We expect China's GDP growth to be around 4% or even lower in 2024! Because the number of bankrupt enterprises in China has reached a historical high in 2023!
God bless and protect the great country of Japan
神を訴えて、ゴミ箱に捨てられたお金をすべて取り戻す時が来ました。
It's incredible to see Japan's building engineering marvel at work to withstand an earthquake
Punishment for world war crimes
🙏 Oh no, hope you're okay, Japan 🇯🇵!
What if it was connected to that wave that hit California
Wrong this solar storms that just happened trigger it and there is more to come very bad science
God bless Japan
Godzilla @ it again
Scary. I grew up in California and experienced the northridge earthquake in 94. I was 8 or 9. It happened while i was staying the night at a friend's house, got a cool scar on my neck from it. Just remember shaking from everywhere and bot able to get anywhere. No control of nothing. Prayers to all

We are getting all sorts of crazy weather on the Asia/ Oceancia side of the world! I'm in Australia and we've had a tornado and major floodings during this Xmas period. It's a testament to the Japanese people in how they behave in such a crisis. I hope all is safe!
Luckily they don't use nuclear energy
Praying for all of the Japanese people.

Thinking of you from San Francisco CA. Earthquakes are expected here also, but most unwanted. My sympathies are with the people of Japan at this very difficult and frightening time. I am hoping a tsunami does not follow. Current information is that the tsunami is not going to be catastrophic – I am sincerely hoping that is correct. My heart and best thoughts go out to everyone in Japan.
🙏
Even back in 2011, not many died from the earthquake itself. Buildings were fine and people acted civil. It’s the tsunami that caused devastation
The Japanese people are the most prepared in the world for earthquakes. God bless them for keeping calm.
Our prayers and thoughts are with all of the people of Japan.

The first natural calamity ever in 2024 what a way to start a new year.
