Toronto – Three Orthodox Christians reportedly killed in Merti Abomsssa Dioceses of East Arsi, Oromia region of Ethiopia.

An Ethiopian Orthodox Church news source on Wednesday reported another person who is a follower of Islamic faith was also killed during the attack.

The gunmen also burned the homes, harvests and cattle of ten Orthodox families in the area.

The incident is linked to ethnic Oromo militant nationalist gunmen operating in the region. There has been a recurring and orchestrated attack mostly targeting Orthodox Christians in the region.

The Federal government and Oromia regional government have been unable to end it although there have been claims that the militant forces are “no longer in a position to pose threat to peace.”

His Grace Abune Elsae, bishop of the East Arsi and Somali dioceses, expressed grief over the latest round of massacre against Orthodox Christians.

He called for the government and the zone administration to eliminate illegal gunmen and discharge its responsibility of protecting  the   security of Orthodox Christians and maintaining peace.

The Orthodox Christian communities in East Arsi say they continue to feel a security threat. The Federal government and Oromia regional state have not remarked about the incident  at the time of this writing.

Massacre of civilians and kidnapping has been prevalent in the Oromia region of Ethiopia since Abiy Ahmed became prime minister in 2018.

Hundreds of Orthodox Christians have been killed in East Arsi Oromia over the past few months alone.
