Toronto – Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia , Waleed A. M. Elkhereiji, was in Ethiopia this week leading a delegation.
He met with Gedion Timothewos Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia.
The Ministry did not disclose detailed information as to what was discussed except saying the two sides ” exchanged views on regional peace and security matters of mutual interest.”
Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry did not disclose details either. On Tuesday, the ministry wrote on X page that “Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. @W_Elkhereiji met with Ethiopian Foreign Minister, Gedion Timothewos, during his official visit to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.”
Notably, Mr. Waleed A. M. Elkhereiji came to Ethiopia after visiting Eritrea. There have been rumors that Saudi Arabia is arming Eritrea in the context of the tension with Ethiopia over access to the Red Sea.
Ethiopia and Eritrea are on the verge of another conflict. This week, it has been reported that Ethiopia deployed troops along the Eritrean border. The Eritrean government did not remark on that. However, some Eritrean news sources dismissed the report as false saying that Abiy Ahmed’s government “to deploy troops along the border has failed” due to resistance from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). The Ethiopian government has been accusing Eritrea of supporting TPLF and other armed groups in Eritrea which the latter denied.
On the same day he visited Ethiopia, Waleed A. M. Elkhereiji headed to South Sudan where he met with President Salva Kiir Mayardit. The agenda item was said to be the diplomatic relation between the two countries.
Saudi Arabia, as a member of the Arab League, has been supporting the Egyptian position in connection with the dispute over the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
