Ethiopia, 31 December 2025 Ethiopia’s State Minister of Transport and Logistics, Berio Hassan, has announced that the number of electric vehicles currently operating across Ethiopia has exceeded 115,000, including electric motorcycles and public transport buses, underscoring the country’s accelerating shift toward sustainable and environmentally friendly mobility.
Speaking to local media, the minister said the capital, Addis Ababa, is now operating more than 110 electric public transport buses, each with a capacity of around 90 passengers. The buses are fully integrated into the city’s daily urban transport network, following a government decision to open the sector to private investment.
Berio Hassan noted that the government has adopted an ambitious plan to increase the number of electric public buses to 500 within the next four years, while expanding electric vehicle operations to several regional cities beyond the capital. The initiative aims to improve national transport infrastructure and promote more equitable access to services nationwide.
