Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has raised concerns about the growing number of security checkpoints across Nigeria, saying they are endangering lives and causing “appalling levels of traffic congestion”.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Obi said he “traversed several major roads across the country” during the festive season and noted that, at times, the gridlocks were so extreme “that travellers bound for distant destinations were forced to abandon their journeys.”

The politician called for urgent reforms, saying checkpoints must be strategically located away from narrow roads and construction zones. Nigerian traffic is notorious for being severe due to high vehicle density and poor road infrastructure.
