Morocco will play against Tanzania in the round of 16 of the 2025 AFCON.
Tanzania finished the group stages as third in Group C with only two points, unexpectedly sealing its ticket to the next round of the continental tournament.
The East African nation drew its last group game today. They mustered a hard-fought 1-1 result against pre-tournament favorites Tunisia, who finished second with four points.
Morocco’s national team secured its spot in the round of 16 after dominating Monday’s third and final game of the group stage with a 3-0 triumph over Zambia.
The Atlas Lions’ performance brought Moroccans’ aspirations to life after an unsatisfying second Group A match against Mali, which finished with a 1-1 draw.
Head coach Walid Regragui acknowledged that the national team must stay strong and consistent throughout the competition despite its strong start in the tournament.
“We cannot win the trophy alone,” Regragui said, urging Moroccans to continue backing the Atlas Lions.
“We should not think the job is done. We still have work to do,” Regragui said.
Morocco knows their Sunday opponent very well.
The two teams played a World Cup qualifier in March, with the Atlas Lions winning 2-0.
They also won a few other games against Tanzania, including a 3-0 victory in January of last year.
Morocco’s Round of 16 game will take place in Rabat’s Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium on Sunday at 5 p.m.
