Kenya, 20 April 2026 – The Kenya Railways is set to launch a new parcel delivery service, which will offer same-day transportation of goods between Nairobi and Mombasa.
In a brief statement on Monday, the agency announced that the service will provide a secure option for moving packages along the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) corridor.
The agency has, however, not revealed more details about the service, including the official launch date or the pricing details of the service.
“Coming soon, parcel delivery by rail. We’re excited to introduce the Parcel Service, offering same-day delivery between Nairobi and Mombasa, fast, safe, and right on track. Stay tuned,” it started.
The introduction of the new service signals efforts to diversify revenue streams from the SGR beyond passenger transport.
Once launched, the service will offer businesses and individuals a reliable alternative to road-based courier services, thus easing congestion on highways and lowering the cost of transporting goods between the two cities.
Since its launch in 2017, the SGR has become a key revenue stream for the government. In 2025, the route recorded Sh21.4 billion in revenue, driven by cargo operations and a passenger base of 2.7 million travellers, underscoring its steady growth.
In late March, President William Ruto launched the construction of the construction of the Naivasha-Kisumu-Malaba Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) extension.
The 475km, Ksh650 billion Shilling project, connecting to Uganda and the DRC, aims to boost regional trade and enhance cargo/passenger transport through western Kenya.
The Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba extension will be developed in two phases. The Naivasha–Kisumu section will be approximately 264 kilometres from Emurtoto in Narok County to Kisumu.
The second phase, from Kisumu to Malaba, will cover about 107 kilometres, traversing Kisumu, Siaya, Vihiga, Kakamega, and Busia counties before terminating at the border town of Malaba.
“This project will ease road congestion by shifting bulk cargo to rail, cutting costs, saving time, and improving safety across our highways,” he added.
