An emotional farewell ceremony in Manenberg honoured two long-serving South African Police Service members whose combined decades of dedication left a lasting mark on the community.

On Thursday, April 15, Manenberg police gathered at Barrons Estate to celebrate a golden milestone in the lives of a distinguished Detective Captain George Fick and a reservist constable who did not want to be named but is known to Athlone News.

Captain Fick began his career in 1985 as a student constable, while the reservist constable served the Manenberg community for 19 years without remuneration.

Captain Fick was born and raised in Bonteheuwel and wanted to serve an impoverished community while helping to create a better future for young people. “My heart is still in community work,” he said.

Early in his career, Captain Fick became an instructor who mentored recruits. Over the decades, he became a detective.

Captain Fick said his work was to assist the community in creating better opportunities for them.

“I am willing to assist people who have problems raising issues and to help create awareness around the needs of women and children. In the future, I want to ensure that children in need receive assistance so they can continue and advance in their future endeavours,” said Captain Fick.

Colleagues described Captain Fick as a patient mentor whose leadership combined wisdom, persistence, and a deep sense of duty.

His leadership extended beyond solving cases, focusing on the values of honour, service, and integrity that influenced generations of officers.

He witnessed major changes in policing over four decades, adapting to evolving crime patterns and modern investigative demands.

As he retires, Captain Fick looks forward to a new chapter filled with rest, family time, and personal fulfilment.

Their departures mark not an ending but a continuation of lives shaped by service, now turning towards well-earned peace.

Family members, colleagues, and community members paid tribute to both officers during the farewell, recognising their contribution to safety, mentorship, and community stability in Manenberg.

Speakers at the event described Captain Fick’s career and the reservist constable’s service as examples of unwavering commitment, noting that their influence will continue to shape Manenberg police long after retirement as younger members carry forward the standards they set.
