A leading member of the United Party, Hopeson Adorye, has criticised the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP for what he describes as its failure to respond publicly to the detention of former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

According to him, the manner in which the former finance minister was arrested warranted a strong public response from the NPP, which he says has so far been absent.

Ken Ofori-Atta was detained by US authorities in a rambo-style operation. He was shoved into a car and up till now the NPP has not organised a press conference to warn the United States over the rambo-style arrest. I am even surprised,” he stated during a panel discussion on UTV’s Adekye Nsroma on Monday, January 12, 2026.

Ken Ofori-Atta arrested and detained in the US

The Embassy of Ghana in Washington, DC has confirmed that Ofori-Atta is currently in the custody of ICE authorities in the United States.

In a statement issued on Saturday, January 10, 2025, and signed by Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, the Embassy said it had received official information confirming the former minister’s detention.

Following the confirmation, the Embassy indicated that it had formally contacted the relevant detention facility to request access to Ofori-Atta in order to provide consular assistance, in line with established diplomatic and international protocols.
