Morocco has been high up on my bucket list for a long time (partly because how cool would it be to sing the song Morocco by Moon Taxi while exploring the country), and it sounds like I’m not the only one with interest in this African hotspot.
In 2025, Morocco achieved something remarkable: It emerged as Africa’s most visited country. Morocco edged ahead of long-time tourism powerhouse Egypt by welcoming nearly 20 million international visitors, which is a record figure that marks a new chapter in the country’s global tourism appeal.
Morocco has benefitted from sustained investment in tourism infrastructure, new flight links from key markets, major cultural and sporting events, and a strategic vision that positions it as a must-see destination for international travelers.
Here’s what’s driving the surge and what you must see and do when you visit.

A new tourism record for Morocco
In 2025, official tourism data shows that Morocco welcomed 19.8 million visitors, an impressive 14% increase from the previous year. That figure not only sets a new peak for the country but also places Morocco squarely at the top of Africa’s tourism rankings, surpassing heavy-hit markets like Egypt and Tunisia.
Part of this growth has come from expanded international connectivity: Morocco has increased direct flight routes from Europe, the Middle East, and even the Americas, making the country more accessible than ever.
Major events like the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) hosted across several Moroccan cities, have also played a role, drawing huge crowds and showcasing the nation’s cultural vibrancy on a continental stage.
But while these numbers are impressive, it’s the experience on the ground that keeps travelers coming back. From ancient medinas to Sahara sunsets, Morocco delivers diversity few destinations can match.
