Police have launched investigations into a deadly robbery in which a private security guard was shot dead and 28 million shillings stolen from a company in Kiwatule, Nakawa division, Kampala.

The incident occurred Monday evening (January 12) at about 7:45pm at Kyolina Kyekikweyimilira Company in Kiwatule parish.

Confirming the incident, the deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, said preliminary findings indicate that the attack was carried out by a gang of four armed robbers riding on two motorcycles.

“Preliminary information indicates that four armed suspects, riding on two motorcycles and armed with three guns, dressed in reflectors, stormed the premises and shot dead a private security guard before making off with cash,” he said.

The victim was identified as Asuman Damba, a 35-year-old employee of Tactical Security Company, who was on duty at the time of the attack.

According to Police, after shooting the guard, the assailants gained entry into the premises and robbed 28 million shillings, before fleeing towards the Kiwatule–Naalya direction.

Owoyesigyire said residents attempted to intervene by throwing stones at the fleeing suspects, prompting the attackers to fire several shots in the air to scare off the crowd and aid their escape.

Police officers from Kira Road Police Division, alongside senior officers, later visited and secured the scene. A case of aggravated robbery and murder was registered at Kiwatule Police Station.

“Scene of Crime Officers documented the scene, statements from relevant witnesses were recorded, and CCTV footage from the area has been reviewed and secured to aid investigations,” said Owoyesigyire.

Police also recovered the deceased guard’s SAR rifle and one live AK-47 round as exhibits. The body was conveyed to Kampala Capital City Authority Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Owoyesigyire said investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest the suspects, urging members of the public to remain calm and co-operate with security agencies.

“We appeal to anyone with information that may help identify or trace the suspects to report to the nearest police station.”
