The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has inaugurated an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research and Integration Team to strengthen innovation and improve weather forecasting services in Nigeria.
The Director General/Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, said the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s digital transformation agenda and the ongoing modernization of meteorological services.
He noted that the agency aims to complement its long-standing physics-based forecasting methods with emerging AI-driven technologies.
The newly constituted team will focus on identifying opportunities, standards, and best practices for applying artificial intelligence in meteorology, as well as integrating AI tools into NiMet’s operational forecasting systems.
This is expected to enhance the speed, accuracy, and accessibility of weather predictions through hybrid AI–traditional models.
Prof. Anosike emphasized that developing internal AI capacity is essential for sustaining NiMet’s leadership in innovation, while ensuring responsible deployment of new technologies to support aviation safety, agriculture, disaster risk reduction, and national development.
The AI Research and Integration Team comprises experts drawn from various units within the agency, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach.
The inauguration marks another milestone in NiMet’s efforts to leverage digital technologies and research-driven solutions to deliver world-class meteorological services.
