ANGOLA — A seasoned and still undefeated Westview girls tennis team will take on a rebuilt Angola team in the Angola Sectional final Thursday afternoon.
The Hornets defeated Prairie Heights 4-1 while the Warriors won over Fremont 4-1 in semifinal duals on Wednesday at Wright Courts.
Angola (13-3 before Thursday) faced more of a challenge in its semifinal. Panther seniors Maddison Certain and Natalie Booth forced a third set with Evelyn Rinard and Kaylee Voigt. Bailey DeLancey had a lot of long points with talented sophomore Mikaela Kolar in the second set and had a 5-4 lead. Junior Ryleah Carlin pushed Hornet Stella Stockamp harder in the second set at No. 2 singles.
Rinard and Voigt won in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. Kolar and Stockamp both won their second sets 7-5 to complete straight-set victories.
“Angola just played better in the third set,” Heights coach Brent Byler said of the No. 1 doubles match. “We didn’t make a ton of mistakes.
“I’m super proud of all of our girls. It was such a fun group to coach,” he continued. “That sophomore group Angola has in singles is tough. I’m not sure Milana (Locane, No. 3 singles player) has lost yet.”
Seniors Laken Mosier and Nevaeh Orr won in straight sets at No. 2 doubles for PH’s lone point.
Hornet coach Amy Buchs knew her girls would have nothing easy over the Panthers.
“Prairie Heights came ready to play. We knew it was going to be a battle,” Buchs said. “Hat’s off to them for having a really good season.”
Westview (11-0 before Thursday) won its four matches in straight sets.
Senior No. 1 doubles player Lanita Mast did not play due to illness for the Warriors. Junior Addy Kauffman subbed in and played with Miley Mast. Kauffman and Mast lost to Eagle seniors Katie McElhoe and Sydney Burkholder 6-4, 6-0.
McElhoe won her 48th career tennis match and tied 2007 graduate Serena Frey as the winningest girls tennis player in FHS history. McElhoe and Burkholder won their 45th doubles match together for the Eagles, including their 13th this spring, and will play in the doubles sectional next week at Carroll.
Warrior coach Carrie Clark hopes to have Lanita Mast back for the sectional final.
“Addy is a great doubles player,” Clark said.
Both Angola and Westview will have advantageous matchups. A couple of the matches will be very important to get.
“We have to lock in and play our game,” Clark said. “We can not let nerves get to us.”
Prairie Heights enjoyed one of its best seasons in program history and finished 11-7. The Panthers defeated East Noble and Fremont for the first time ever in dual matches. PH had an impressive 3-2 win over a young growing West Noble teams that is having one of its better seasons in awhile and is led by sophomore No. 1 player Natalia Riegsecker, who is undefeated this spring.
Five seniors played for PH: DeLancey, Orr, Mosier, Booth and Certain.
DeLancey was largely where this team was built when Byler convinced her to try something new and play tennis as a freshman. There was a lot of resistance, but DeLancey gave it a try and brought some friends with her. Mosier is in her third year of ever playing tennis. Booth and Orr both started playing tennis last year.
Byler is also the Prairie Heights athletic director. And he found some time to see his son Leyton play his final season of collegiate tennis for Trine University before graduating earlier this month. Leyton primarily played No. 4 singles and went 11-10 this 2025-26 season as the Thunder went 15-7 in dual matches for coach Erin Kolar.
“I give Coach (Torin) Kellett a lot of credit to help the girls find their love for tennis and to start them playing summer and winter tennis,” Byler said. “All the credit goes to the girls.”
The Angola Sectional started on Tuesday with the host Hornets defeating Lakeland 5-0.
In other area action Tuesday, Churubusco lost to Carroll 5-0 in the first dual of the Carroll Sectional.
