The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) has responded to claims by Juja MP George Koimburi that he has defected from the party, stating that he has never formally been a member.

In a statement released on Thursday, DCP Secretary-General Hezron Obaga claimed Koimburi had not participated in party activities in recent months.

“Despite having been an ally of the party leader, he has not accompanied him (Gachagua) in any public function for the last six months while giving all manner of excuses,” the statement reads.

The statement also outlines that, according to the party, Koimburi requested an urgent meeting with the party leader (Rigathi Gachagua) on Monday, January 12.

The party said the meeting took place at the leader’s private office at 5 pm and was attended by Deputy National Chairperson Hon. Peter Mwathi.

During the meeting, the DCP statement said Koimburi expressed concern over the inclusion of Aloise Kinyanjui, his competitor in the last General Elections, in party activities.

Koimburi reportedly raised concerns that Kinyanjui had been allowed to greet residents at Kimbo Junction in Juja on Sunday, January 11.

The statement further said Koimburi shared his understanding that Members of Parliament and Senators who voted against the impeachment of the party leader would not be subjected to party nominations and would be given direct nominations to contest the 2027 General Elections.

According to the party, Koimburi requested a written assurance of a direct nomination and sought to be excused from attending public functions with the party leader until February next year.

The party leader reportedly thanked Koimburi for his support during the impeachment process but informed him that DCP is a democratic party and all positions will be determined through free and fair party nominations.

The statement reads, “Much as he appreciated the support of all those who voted against his impeachment, it would be undemocratic to exempt them from party nominations as that would effectively kill the party that is enjoying massive support.”

The party said Koimburi was advised to prepare for nominations scheduled for March next year.

The response comes after Koimburi spoke publicly on Wednesday about his loyalty to the party leader, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

“I was Rigathi Gachagua’s diehard supporter. I followed him when he was impeached, and I have respected him. I have even gone to the cell because of him. I respected him deeply,” he said.

Koimburi said he intends to focus on development projects for the Juja constituency.

“I will go to the State House to ask for roads and deliver them to the people of Juja. When 2027 comes, and politics begins, I will direct my people on where to cast their votes, based on where I will be,” he said.

He added, “Those in the budget, such as roads, electricity and other infrastructure, will be completed under President Ruto’s leadership.”
