The City of Windhoek has issued a scam alert to residents following a growing number of fake rental scams reported across the city.
On Tuesday, tenants were warned not to pay or deposit any fees before signing a lease and confirming the property’s legitimacy.
City Police and municipal officials say the rise in fraudulent property listings is taking advantage of Windhoek’s high demand for affordable housing, leaving many residents financially and emotionally distressed.
According to the City’s Consumer Protection and Community Liaison unit, rental scams remain one of the most frequently reported forms of consumer fraud. Scammers often hunt students, first-time renters, and low- to middle-income earners who are looking for accommodation through social media platforms.
In some reported cases, victims lost between N$2 500 and N$10 000 after paying deposits for properties that were either non-existent, already occupied, or not owned by the advertiser.
The City urges residents to take precautionary steps before entering into any rental agreement. Tenants need to view the property in person, meet the landlord or property manager face-to-face, and request proof of ownership, including a title deed and valid identification.
Residents are also cautioned to be suspicious of rental deals that appear significantly cheaper than market rates.
Residents who suspect a scam or who have already fallen victim are encouraged to report the matter immediately.
Cases can be reported via the City of Windhoek’s toll-free number, 061 302 302, or the SMS line, 4444. The City further said that timely reporting not only assists investigations but also helps protect other residents from falling prey to similar scams.
