Ethiopia, 4 January 2026 The African Union has expressed deep concern over recent developments in Venezuela related to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and attacks targeting official state institutions by the United States military.

In an official statement, the African Union (AU) reaffirmed its firm commitment to the fundamental principles of international law, particularly respect for state sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the right of peoples to self-determination, as enshrined in the United Nations Charter.

The statement emphasized the importance of dialogue and the peaceful settlement of disputes, stressing the need to respect constitutional and institutional frameworks in a spirit of good neighborliness, cooperation, and peaceful coexistence among states.
