KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Fans flooded Kansas City from across the globe to see Argentina and Algeria — and to prove the metro can host the world.
Kansas City’s first-ever World Cup match is officially in the history books, and for thousands of fans it was historic for more than what happened on the pitch.
Lionel Messi may have been the marquee name but Kansas City set the stage for a global moment.
From early Tuesday, the city looked and sounded different. Streets and gathering spots filled with chants, singing and a festival-like energy as two teams from two continents arrived for KC’s first World Cup game: Argentina vs. Algeria.
“It feels like it’s a party of futbol from all nations,” one fan said.
Downtown and watch party locations across the metro became a sea of colors – blue and white for Argentina, green and white for Algeria – with visitors traveling from places like France, Colombia, Jamaica and Cameroon, alongside locals who wanted to be part of a once-in-a-lifetime day.
“This is Kansas City, baby. This is what we do!” another fan said.
Whether fans had tickets inside the stadium or watched from Power & Light, Fan Fest, Shawnee Mission Park, or other gatherings around the metro, many described the experience as surreal.
“It’s just so fun that Kansas City is hosting a World Cup. It’s so unreal, but it’s real. It’s really happening,” a fan at a watch party said.
For some, it was a dream come true.
“To be in a local city where the FIFA game is, it’s a dream come true… we’re living our dream right now,” one fan said.
For others, it hit even closer to home, especially those who’ve built new lives here.
“I am from Argentina. I live in KC for four years and no one knew where KC was, and now seeing Argentina in Kansas City, it’s crazy and amazing,” another fan said.
As the day unfolded, the mood stayed joyful, with a mix of families, longtime soccer fans and first-timers taking in the atmosphere.
“Very beautiful, beautiful, beautiful city,” one visitor said.
And long after the final whistle, the celebration continued, with crowds dancing and partying into the night.
“It was really cool. I loved it. It was amazing, phenomenal,” a fan said.
Argentina brought the defending champions, Algeria brought the challenge, and Kansas City showed it can host the world.
