Australia will take on Egypt at AT&T Stadium on Friday in a battle between two teams who were somewhat disappointed to finish second in their respective World Cup groups. Mohamed Salah could only fire the Pharaohs to a runner-up finish in Group G, while the Soccerroos settled for second in Group D behind the United States.
Egypt would have topped its pool were it not for a disappointing draw against Iran last time out, resulting in what is easily a tougher run through the knockout stages. The winner of this match will have the honor of facing either Argentina or Cape Verde in the last 16, with current world champion Argentina heavily backed to advance.

Australia, meanwhile, might have finished first in its own group were it not for a 2-0 loss against the Stars and Stripes, followed by a 0-0 stalemate with Paraguay. Tony Popovic’s side haven’t quite managed to recapture the magic of their opening 2-0 triumph over Turkey, but will hope to do just that this weekend.
Egypt has by far the more worrisome squad issues here, not least of which is the doubt over captain Salah’s involvement following a hamstring strain. Hamdy Fathy, Hossam Abdelmaguid, Mohamed Abdelmonem, and Ahmed El Fotouh are each also considered questionable, while Mohanad Lasheen is suspended after picking up two cautions in the group stage.
