A place at the 2027 Magical Kenya Open (MKO) will be the ultimate prize when the 49th Kenya Amateur Strokeplay Championship tees off at Royal Nairobi Golf Club today, with the country’s top amateurs and regional stars battling for one of the biggest opportunities in Kenyan golf.
For the first time in the season, the championship winner will secure direct qualification to the 2027 Magical Kenya Open, earning the chance to compete alongside professionals on the DP World Tour.
The four-day tournament has attracted a strong international field featuring golfers from Kenya, Zambia, India, Namibia, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Lebanon, Ethiopia, Ghana and China, further cementing its status as one of the region’s premier amateur events.
Defending champion Jay Sandhu heads into the championship in impressive form after completing a double triumph at last weekend’s NCBA Limuru Open and Brackenhurst Trophy. The Muthaiga Golf Club golfer, who also leads the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) Order of Merit, will be chasing back-to-back Strokeplay titles after lifting last year’s crown at VetLab Sports Club.
“I want to win the Kenya Amateur Strokeplay Championship. I am proud to have won it last year, and I want to do it as well this year and have bragging rights. I plan to work hard and experiment a lot during the tournament,” Sandhu offered.
Sandhu is expected to face stiff competition from a quality field that includes 2024 champion William Odek, Ebil Omollo, Junaid Manji, Gilbert Chalwe, John Kamais and Elvis Muigua.
Besides the coveted MKO qualification slot, golfers will also compete for a share of the Sh700,000 prize purse, while valuable KAGC Order of Merit and World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points will also be up for grabs.
Kenya Golf Union Chairman Brian Akun said the opportunity to qualify for the Magical Kenya Open has elevated the championship’s importance.
“The NCBA Kenya Amateur Strokeplay Championship has become one of the flagship events on our calendar, consistently attracting the best amateur golfers from Kenya and across the region, with an opportunity to qualify for the 2027 Magical Kenya Open playing a crucial role. That opportunity raises the stakes even higher and reflects the continued efforts to create a clear pathway for amateur golfers to compete at the highest level. We are grateful to NCBA for their unwavering support in growing amateur golf and providing players with meaningful opportunities to develop their careers,” Akun noted.
NCBA Group Managing Director John Gachora said the tournament continues to provide an important pathway for emerging golfers.
“At NCBA, we remain committed to supporting golf development by investing in competitions that nurture talent and create opportunities for players to progress. The Kenya Amateur Strokeplay Championship perfectly aligns with that vision by bringing together elite amateur golfers and offering them a chance to compete for one of the biggest opportunities in Kenyan golf, qualification to the Magical Kenya Open. We wish all the participants the very best as they compete for this historic milestone,” said Gachora.
Meanwhile, golfers competing in the Malindi Golf Club Monthly Mug this weekend will also have an opportunity to book places in the NCBA Golf Series Grand Finale, scheduled for Karen Country Club on November 28.
Qualification slots will be awarded to the Overall Gross Winner, Men’s Gross Winner, Lady Gross Winner, Division Two Men’s Winner, Division Two Lady Winner, Division Three Winner, and the leading Junior golfer.
