Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Tuesday hosted US Congressman Darin LaHood at Villa Somalia, where the two leaders discussed ways to strengthen security cooperation, expand trade and investment, and deepen relations between Somalia and the United States.
The meeting, held at the Presidential Palace in Mogadishu during LaHood’s working visit to Somalia, focused on strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries in areas including peace, security, counterterrorism, trade and investment.
Villa Somalia said President Hassan Sheikh thanked the US government and the American people for their continued support to Somalia, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships and creating a secure environment that encourages investment and development.
The president also highlighted Somalia’s commitment to working with international partners as the country continues efforts to improve security, rebuild state institutions and create conditions that support economic growth.
“Somalia remains committed to strengthening international cooperation and ensuring a secure environment that promotes investment and development,” read part of a statement released by Villa Somalia.
LaHood welcomed Somalia’s progress in rebuilding government institutions, stabilising the country and sustaining operations against terrorist groups. He also expressed his commitment to deepening the friendship and cooperation between Somalia and the United States.
The talks came as Somalia continues military operations against the al-Shabaab militant group with support from international partners, including the United States, while pursuing reforms aimed at improving governance and strengthening public institutions.
The two sides also explored ways to expand cooperation beyond security by increasing collaboration in trade and investment, as Somalia seeks to attract foreign capital and grow its economy.
The discussions reflected a broader push to link security cooperation with economic partnerships, with both countries recognising that lasting stability is critical to attracting investment and creating new business opportunities.
The United States remains one of Somalia’s key international partners, providing support in areas such as security, governance, humanitarian assistance and institutional development. The two countries continue to work together in counterterrorism efforts while supporting reforms aimed at strengthening Somalia’s state institutions.
Tuesday’s meeting underscored continued engagement between Mogadishu and Washington as both governments seek to broaden cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Villa Somalia said the discussions reaffirmed the importance of the long-standing partnership between the two countries and their shared commitment to advancing security, peace, trade and investment.
