Mogadishu (HOL) — Somalia has sent two students to represent the country at an international Quran competition in Saudi Arabia, following their success in a national competition held during Ramadan.
The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs held a farewell ceremony Friday for the students, who will compete in Quran memorization categories at the international event in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The ministry’s Director General, Abdinaafac Ahmed Abdullahi, urged the students to represent Somalia with honor and demonstrate the values and teachings of the Quran during the competition.
The two representatives are Mohamed Nur Mohamed Ibrahim, who will compete in memorizing the 30th chapter of the Quran, and Muna Abdirahman Mohamed Sabriye, who will compete in memorizing the 15th chapter.
Both students qualified after taking first place in their respective categories at a national Quran competition organized by the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs during Ramadan.
Ministry officials said Somalia’s participation reflects its efforts to promote Quranic education, strengthen the skills of Quran teachers and encourage young people to excel in memorization and Tajweed, the rules governing Quranic recitation.
Somali participants have achieved notable results in regional and international Quran competitions in recent years, contributing to the country’s growing profile in Quranic education and memorization.
