RESIDENTS living inside a makeshift shack in Delft got a surprise visitor on Wednesday when a drunk off-duty law enforcement officer crashed into their home.

The 31-year-old officer was reportedly dik gesuip when he lost control of his work bakkie and crashed into the shack inside the Covid informal settlement around 1pm. No injuries were reported.

The LEAP officer was detained at Delft police station for driving under the influence as well as reckless driving and is expected to make his first appearance at Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Law enforcement spokesperson, Wayne Dyason, said the matter will be dealt with according to the City of Cape Town’s disciplinary procedures.

Dyason het die stuk do gesny: “Just before 1pm on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, the City’s Law Enforcement Department was alerted to an incident involving an off-duty LEAP officer.

“Information at hand is that he veered off the road while driving a Law Enforcement bakkie and collided with an informal structure in Delft.

“The officer was arrested by SAPS on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

“To our knowledge, no injuries were reported during the incident, but SAPS would be best placed to advise on the details of the incident.

“The matter will be dealt with in line with applicable City disciplinary procedures.”

SAPS confirmed in a statement: “This office confirms that a 31-year-old male suspect who is a LEAP member was arrested and detained at Delft SAPS for Driving Under the Influence and reckless driving.

“This comes after a LEAP vehicle crashed into an informal household at Delft on Wednesday, 12 August 2026.

“No injuries were reported and the suspect will appear at Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 14 August 2026.”
