One body has been recovered after a fishing boat capsized in Lake Naivasha on Friday, with three other fishermen still missing.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Kenya Red Cross said it had launched a full-scale operation to locate the remaining victims.

“Kenya Red Cross teams are responding to a drowning incident involving fishermen at Lake Naivasha in Nakuru County. Four people are feared to have drowned. One body has been recovered and search and rescue/recovery operations for the others are ongoing,” the Kenya Red Cross said.

The rescue effort involves several agencies, including the Nakuru County Disaster Management team, local fishermen and the Kenya Coast Guard.

Reports indicate the fishermen are middle-aged men, with two believed to be brothers.

The incident occurred near Kihoto in Naivasha, under challenging lake conditions that have previously contributed to similar accidents. Authorities, including the sub-county commissioner, are coordinating the ongoing search and recovery operation.

Lake Naivasha has recorded multiple drowning incidents in recent years, often linked to unregistered boats, unsafe fishing practices and rough waters.

In a previous incident in the Malewa area, five fishermen were involved in a similar accident; two were rescued, while the others drowned. Fisheries officials later confirmed the vessel was unregistered, with strong winds cited as a key factor.

Authorities have noted a rise in drowning cases associated with illegal or unsafe fishing activities on the lake, where many fishermen rely on makeshift vessels along the shoreline.

The Kenya Red Cross and other emergency responders remain at the scene as the search for the missing fishermen continues.
