Johannesburg motorists have been urged to avoid parts of Doornfontein after multiple vehicles became submerged and trapped in floodwater at the Siemert Road and Currey Street intersection on Sunday.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) said officers were at the scene managing traffic, assisting stranded motorists and diverting vehicles away from the flooded road.
JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla said persistent heavy rainfall had resulted in dangerous driving conditions across the city.
“Currently, localised flooding has been reported at Siemert Road and Currey Street, Doornfontein.
”Multiple vehicles have become submerged and stuck in high water at this location,” Fihla said.
Motorists urged to avoid flooded area
Fihla said motorists travelling towards the affected area were being diverted onto alternative routes and urged them to avoid the area entirely where possible.
The JMPD warned motorists against attempting to drive through submerged roads or areas with high-standing water.
“If you encounter submerged roads or high standing water, turn around immediately. Stalled vehicles block emergency response access and present severe safety hazards,” Fihla said.
Motorists have also been urged to drive well below the speed limit, maintain a greater following distance and keep their headlights switched on.
”Follow all temporary barracades, road closure, and instructions from JMPD officers directing traffic on site,” said Fihla.
The JMPD said road users who encounter stranded vehicles, dangerous obstructions or rising water levels should report them to the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Call Centre.
