Community leaders in Dodel, located in the Podor department of Senegal, have established new regulations aimed at reducing expenses associated with weddings, baptisms, and funerals. The bride price is now set at 100,000 FCFA for an unmarried woman and 50,000 FCFA for a woman who has been married before.
These amounts were determined during a meeting that included the village chief, the imam, community leaders, and residents, according to a report published on September 27 by Seneweb’s correspondent in Podor. This is a community decision implemented in Dodel and not a national reform of Senegalese law.
The agreement also calls for weddings, baptisms, and other family ceremonies to be organized more simply. Activities deemed excessively noisy and certain expenses related to folklore must be reduced.
Forms of mutual aid among women remain permitted during ceremonies. However, the practice of recording these contributions in a notebook has been abandoned to avoid creating financial obligations from one event to another.
The regulations also apply to funerals. Bereaved families will no longer be required to serve lunches for three days, and visitors will not be expected to stay at the deceased’s home throughout the mourning period.
