Senior Policy Advisor for Libya, Jeremy Berndt
Jeremy Berndt, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, assumed his responsibilities as the Senior Policy Advisor for Libya in July 2026. He served as Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy from October 2023 until August 2026. He served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy to Libya from August to October 2023. Prior to that, he served as Director for North African Affairs at the National Security Council, where he coordinated the development and implementation of U.S. policies toward Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco.
Before serving at the National Security Council, he was the Political Economic Section Chief at the U.S. Embassy in Muscat, Oman. Prior to that, he was Deputy Director of the Office of Maghreb Affairs in the State Department’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, following a tour in the same office as Senior Libya Desk Officer. He has also served as the Political Economic Section Chief at the U.S. Embassy in Libreville, Gabon, as well as in positions in Jerusalem and the Office of Arabian Peninsula Affairs in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs. He is the recipient of a number of State Department Superior and Meritorious Honor Awards.
Jeremy Berndt holds a PhD in History from Northwestern University. He has studied Arabic, French, Fulfulde, Hausa, and Hebrew. He grew up in Massachusetts.
