TORORO – Tororo Municipality’ mayor-elect Bernard Ochieng says his focus will be to promote unity in diversity in the cosmopolitan municipality.
The municipality has been torn apart along tribal lines, leading to the formation of camps for those paying allegiance to the Iteso-backed candidate, while others backed those fronted by the Jopadhola.
These have left the municipality lagging in terms of development since the leaders were not put to proper accountability.
Soon after his declaration on January 27, 2026, Ochieng, who is the East Radio manager and presenter, said he is going to use his media experience to focus on building unity and focus on effective service delivery in consultation with various stakeholders.
Ochieng of National Resistance Movement (NRM) party was declared the winner of the election after he garnered 4,844 votes against incumbent Kenneth Orono Nyapidi, who got 2,322 votes.
Other candidates were Omaidu Robert Etatai (Ind) 1,652, Okudo Andrew (Ind) 69 and Alexson Mukqkanta (NUP) 192.
With the election of Member of Parliament Shaym Jay Tanna, the team is committed to revamping the image of what was once an industrial town, now that it has been elevated to a city status.
