That means he must check in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement regularly, which he had been doing as part of his existing asylum application.Tendo’s attorney said he was released from ICE custody in Strafford, New Hampshire on Friday and was picked up by his supporters. He is currently on his way home to Vermont. Immigration lawyer Brett Stokes previously said that Tendo’s original asylum application was rejected. He has since motioned to reopen his asylum application. That file is pending. Tendo was detained just days before a scheduled meeting with federal agents to discuss his latest application and taken to Strafford to be held.His attorney said they are appealing the deportation order and have filed for a stay of removal with the court.

Tendo was taken into federal custody on Feb. 4 as he was arriving to his workplace in Shelburne. Tendo, a licensed nursing assistant, has been living in the United States for years and has been seeking asylum from Uganda, according to Jacob Berkowitz, the president of the University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC) Support Staff United union.
