EMPD officers discovered live ammunition and explosives on December 31 in a Wendy cottage at a guest house in Lakefield.

The recovery followed information received by members of the EMPD, Community Liaison Unit (CLU), EMPD K9 Unit, and explosive unit officers regarding the possible presence of live explosives and ammunition.

According to EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Kelebogile Thepa, the officers responded to a property at the corner of Cernan and Lunar roads, where they conducted a search.

The recovered explosives and ammunition.

“A brown box containing the exhibits was pointed out. Officers then cordoned off the scene and requested the EMPD K9 Unit to assist with an explosives detection dog,” said Thepa.

With the help of the dog, they could confirm that the box contained one 60mm mortar bomb, one 60mm illuminating bomb, one R1 magazine, and 79 live rounds of ammunition.

Thepa added that although the officers made no arrests at the scene, they handed over the case to the SAPS Explosives Unit for further handling and investigation.
