The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has unveiled the construction of new officers’ accommodation facilities in Karen, Nairobi, in a move aimed at strengthening welfare, morale and operational readiness within the military.
The project was officially inaugurated during a groundbreaking ceremony officiated by the Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF), General Charles Kahariri.
In a statement, KDF said the project marked a major step in the implementation of KDF’s long-term development programme.
“The project marks a significant milestone in the military’s ongoing welfare and infrastructure development programme,” the statement reads.
During the ceremony, General Kahariri was briefed on the scope and design of the project, which is scheduled for completion within one year.
The accommodation facility will comprise modern residential units built to contemporary standards, alongside essential support amenities designed to provide a safe, comfortable and conducive living environment for officers.
The Karen housing project is expected to play a critical role in addressing the growing demand for quality accommodation within the Kenya Defence Forces, particularly in Nairobi and its environs, where the pressure on housing has increased due to expanding military operations and personnel requirements.
The project aims to enhance the overall well-being of officers and their families, while also supporting effective service delivery.

Speaking during the event, General Kahariri emphasised the importance of timely and high-quality execution of the project.
He urged the contractor and all stakeholders involved to strictly adhere to approved timelines, construction standards and safety regulations throughout the building period.
The CDF noted that disciplined project implementation was essential to ensuring value for money and delivering facilities that meet the long-term needs of the Defence Forces.
The officers’ accommodation project in Karen forms part of a broader nationwide housing initiative being rolled out by the KDF to improve living conditions for military personnel across various ranks.
Similar projects are at different stages of implementation in other regions of the country as the military seeks to modernise its infrastructure in line with evolving operational demands.
General and senior military officers, officials from the Ministry of Defence, and representatives of the project contractor attended the groundbreaking ceremony, underscoring the importance attached to the initiative by the military leadership.
Once completed, the Karen officers’ accommodation facility is expected to significantly boost housing capacity for KDF officers stationed in Nairobi, while setting a benchmark for future military housing projects across the country.
