Counties weighed down by huge bank loans/ROSA MUMANYI
A report by the Controller of Budget, Margaret Nyakang’o, reveals that several Kenyan counties are heavily burdened by high-interest bank loans used to cover salaries and utilities.
Nairobi leads significantly, with the Executive owing Sh6.04 billion and the Assembly Sh243.7 million.
Other heavily indebted regions include Machakos Executive (Sh544.25 million), Homa Bay Executive (Sh471.48 million), and Kisumu Executive (Sh289.07 million).
Vihiga Executive and the assemblies of Nyandarua and Laikipia also face substantial debts.
This reliance on commercial loans highlights a growing financial strain within county governments across the country.
