The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has disclosed that the United States government has assured Ghana that it will not stand in the way of efforts to extradite two high profile Ghanaians of interest.

The two individuals are former Minister of Finance Ken Ofori Atta, and former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer Sedina Tamakloe Attionu.

In a statement on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, the foreign affairs minister said the assurance was given during a high-level bilateral meeting between Ghanaian and US officials.

Ablakwa indicated that the meeting reviewed the state of Ghana–US relations and law enforcement cooperation, noting that Ghana facilitated the extradition of nine suspected individuals to the United States in 2025.

“Ghana and the United States applauded our improved security and law enforcement cooperation leading to the extradition of 9 suspects from Ghana to the USA in 2025, and the ongoing commendable efforts to also send over 2 Ghanaians of high interest from the US to Ghana,” Ablakwa stated.

He revealed that the US government had given a clear assurance regarding Ghana’s request for the extradition of Ken Ofori-Atta and Sedina Tamakloe Attionu.

“The United States Government has assured, that without prejudice to judicial processes, it will not stand in the way of Ghana as regards the removal of Ken Ofori-Atta and Sedina Tamakloe Attionu,” the minister said.

Meanwhile, Frank Davies, a member of Ofori Atta’s legal team, has hinted at legal steps initiated in the United States to challenge the custody of Ofori Atta following his detention by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

According to Davies, Ofori-Atta is currently in ICE custody and that his legal team, working in collaboration with lawyers in the United States, has already moved to contest the detention in court.

“Ken Ofori-Atta has been picked up by ICE. We all know he is in custody. What every diligent lawyer would do is to assure himself or herself of the process’s attendant on the custody,” he said.

He disclosed that the legal challenge has formally been filed and will be heard later in January 2026.

“The lawyers in America have filed a process in court… A process has been filed in court to challenge his custody in ICE detention. That process would be heard later this month,” Davies disclosed.
