The United People’s Movement (UPM) is mourning the death of one of its founding members, Willem ‘Willy’ Hochtritt.

UPM president Jan van Wyk says Hochtritt died in the Roman Catholic Hospital in Windhoek on Thursday morning.

According to Van Wyk, Hochtritt served the party in various leadership positions since its formation in 2010, and was the UPM branch chairperson for Kavuki at Rehoboth from August 2021 until his death.

Due to his experience in electoral processes, Van Wyk says Hochtritt also served as the party’s director of elections.

“He was always willing to give advice. The movement could, on short notice, call on him to represent it on any platform without doubts about his capabilities. On several occasions, he also represented me at events,” Van Wyk says.

Van Wyk describes Hochtritt’s death as a great loss to his family and to the UPM.

The party says Hochtritt was outspoken on issues affecting his community and was committed to its development.

“He had a heart for others. We are saddened by his passing. Rehoboth has lost a strong voice against the oppression of its people,” the UPM notes in a statement.

Hochtritt is survived by his wife and children. A memorial service is expected to take place at his home at Rehoboth on Friday evening.
