OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – “If I can make a difference to a person’s life, that person will make a difference to another one”
Father Vincent Sunguti was born in the Western region of Kenya. He came to America for education and now works under the Archdiocese of Omaha.
He remembers the poverty back home.
“Many African countries: development depends on the connection you have politically. In the radius you have 20 miles, no piped water, this is reality. No electricity,” said Father Vincent.
Now, he’s a priest at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Gretna. He wants to help the children back home.
“To build, first of all, four classrooms. We are going to drill a well out of the $140,000. Number three, we are going to build a kitchen. This money is also going to help us build bathrooms,” says Father Vincent.
He’s teamed up with former Nebraska State Treasurer Shane Osborn and former Boys Town student Spike Sharp. Together, they’re building a school for 500 students.
“I just look at the impact, I look at the need. I look at the Christian values they’re instilling in these young kids and I think they deserve a chance,” said Osborn.
They still need to raise $136,000 to finish. They’re now asking the community to help out.
“The number one impact from this project so far has been humbling my life a little bit and realizing that so much great is around me even though sometimes we miss the small things,” said Sharp.
Sharp transferred into Boys Town from Colorado as a kid and lived on campus for eight years. He credits much of his success as an adult to Boys Town. He’s been working on the social media part of the project.
“When I’m giving back to my village, it’s just because without the missionaries who came in from Ireland , I couldn’t have been where I am today,” says Father Vincent.
So far they’ve raised $22,000 through St. Patrick. All money raised goes directly towards building African Educational Support Inc.
They’re hoping to have the project done in a few months. Construction hasn’t officially started, but is intended once the money is raised. The team will be providing real time updates on progress on their website.
