KYENJOJO – At just one year and five months of age, Derrick Mujuni from Bularro village, Nantungo sub-county, is fighting for his life.
When his mother, Rose Basemera, noticed early on that Derrick was meeting growth milestones like other children, she sought advice from elders in the village who recommended local herbs, but the remedies failed to improve his condition.
When Mujuni turned six months, his mother took him to Kyenjojo General Hospital after examination, and doctors discovered a hole in one of the veins of his heart. He was immediately referred to the Uganda Heart Institute, where specialists confirmed that Mujuni suffers from three holes in his heart and urgently requires surgery.

Since then, Derrick has been on continuous medication. In December last year, he returned for a medical review, and doctors reiterated the urgent need for surgery estimated at shillings 20 million. The sum, the parents say, is far beyond the means of his mother and family.
The family is now appealing to well-wishers and charity organisations to assist in raising the funds needed to save Mujuni’s life.
