{"id":10347,"date":"2026-01-08T01:32:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T01:32:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/10347\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T01:32:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T01:32:10","slug":"montanans-celebrate-18-years-of-volunteering-in-uganda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/10347\/","title":{"rendered":"Montanans celebrate 18 years of volunteering in Uganda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tom and Angie Osborne are members of the Helena Outdoor Club, and for the past 18 years, they\u2019ve volunteered overseas with Montana-based nonprofit organizations in Uganda, working to improve the lives of people impacted by war and disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there was ever a way that I could somehow bring peace to the world with the skills that I had, I would really like to do that,\u201d Tom said.<\/p>\n<p>Starting in 2008, the two went on missions to Uganda with nonprofits for weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Tom, a retired hydrologist, aimed to bring clean water and advanced agricultural practices to remote villages, helping develop drip irrigation during dry seasons and building clean water wells.<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767835929_971_.jpeg\" alt=\"Tom Osborne in Uganda\"  width=\"1280\" height=\"720\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Tom and Angie Osborne<\/p>\n<p>        Tom Osborne educating Ugandans on implementing clean water filtrations<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was immediately clear that unless we could address some of the fundamental problems of their contaminated water supplies, people were gonna be sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Angie, a registered nurse, worked in the medical field, bringing over medical supplies, hygiene kits, and education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#8217;t think about how important it is for us to be able to read, to be able to wash our hands all the time,\u201d Angie said. \u201cI mean, it\u2019s humbling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In their most recent trips, they focused on training and education, building up infrastructure, and giving them the tools they need to solve things themselves.<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767835929_978_.jpeg\" alt=\"Angie Osborne in Uganda\"  width=\"1280\" height=\"720\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Tom and Angie Osborne<\/p>\n<p>        Angie Osborne educating Ugandans on proper hand washing technique<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it became clear to us that you had to do more than just put in infrastructure and leave. You have to become part of the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While not volunteering, they spent their time following their passion for exploring the outdoors, while keeping in mind the bigger picture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to be able to give back, and that\u2019s what it means,\u201d Angie said. \u201cIf I can give just even a small part of who I am or what I do, that is very satisfying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767835930_152_.jpeg\" alt=\"Ugandans with the Osbornes\"  width=\"1280\" height=\"720\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Tom and Angie Osborne<\/p>\n<p>        Ugandans using a water well<\/p>\n<p>The Osbornes will be presenting \u201cMontana to Uganda with love\u201d on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Montana Wild, showcasing their work, hoping to inspire others to follow their example.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs long as you&#8217;ve got kindness and love in your heart, you will find a way to do something for other people,\u201d Angie said.<\/p>\n<p>The event is open to the public and offers a chance to learn more about their work and Ugandan culture.
