{"id":10371,"date":"2026-01-08T01:53:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T01:53:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/10371\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T01:53:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T01:53:13","slug":"community-rallies-against-sewage-pollution-along-cape-town-coastline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/10371\/","title":{"rendered":"Community rallies against sewage pollution along Cape Town coastline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lifelong surfer and water quality advocate Jamii Hamlin says Cape Town\u2019s Helderberg coastline is facing ongoing sewage pollution that is affecting daily life, water safety, and tourism.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He explains that untreated sewage is contaminating rivers, beaches, and oceans, exposing communities to harmful bacteria and creating uncertainty around recreational water use.<\/p>\n<p>Hamlin warns that water quality can fluctuate unpredictably due to sewage overflows and stormwater drains, particularly after rainfall, and that current public reporting is insufficient.<\/p>\n<p>He proposes a water quality flag system to give beachgoers real-time guidance, similar to the shark-spotting programme that informs residents about potential dangers in the water.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve made many suggestions and written to the City of Cape Town, to the mayor.
