{"id":10445,"date":"2026-01-08T02:54:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T02:54:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/10445\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T02:54:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T02:54:18","slug":"concern-over-release-of-east-london-assault-suspects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/10445\/","title":{"rendered":"Concern over release of East London assault suspects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t\tThe assault case was postponed to February.\n\t<\/p>\n<p>The decision to release three men accused of assaulting a security guard in East London, Eastern Cape, on warning has sparked concern, with political leaders warning it may convey the wrong message to the public.<\/p>\n<p>The suspects appeared in the East London Magistrate\u2019s Court on Tuesday, where they face a charge of common assault. <\/p>\n<p>Their court appearance follows a widely shared video showing one of the accused kicking security guard Xolisile Nogwele Nongodlwana in a parking lot at eBuhlanti Marina Glen, an incident that sparked widespread condemnation on social media.<\/p>\n<p>East London assault case postponed<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.co.za\/news\/arrested-security-guard-east-london-assault-video\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Two of the accused were arrested<\/a> shortly after the incident and were released on warning on 1 January.<\/p>\n<p>They returned to court on Tuesday alongside a third suspect who was arrested later. <\/p>\n<p>The state confirmed that the newly added accused would also be released on warning.<\/p>\n<p>The magistrate warned the three men to attend future court proceedings and postponed the matter to 25 February to allow for further police investigation.<\/p>\n<p>ALSO READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.co.za\/news\/east-london-security-guard-assault-suspect-now-without-a-job\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">East London security guard assault: Suspect now without a job<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The decision drew criticism from political leaders. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8FT5F2ITqpw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Newzroom Afrika<\/a>, EFF Eastern Cape chairperson Zilindile Vena welcomed the arrest of the third suspect but expressed frustration over the release of all three accused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt sends mixed messages to society whilst we have stood up together and said no to violence, but the justice system is again sending [the] wrong message,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t have hooligans running around and capturing our streets. That is why we are here. It\u2019s the first incident; Buffalo City is a friendly city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have such incidents. We are quite not happy with the decision of the court,\u201d Faku said.<\/p>\n<p>Labour unions call for stronger security measures<\/p>\n<p>Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) East London chairperson Ondela Sokomani indicated the South African Municipal Workers\u2019 Union (Sawu) would engage ANC leadership in the Buffalo City region to push for improved worker protection and strengthened access control measures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe municipality recently renovated Baby Lee Park, and there is a ticket office there, which we believe should have been used as part of the access control measures to prevent people driving unmarked vehicles from entering a facility such as eBuhlanti and subsequently disappearing. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it had not been for social media and the patriotism of South Africans, nobody would have known who these gentlemen are,\u201d Sokomani told the broadcaster.<\/p>\n<p>He added that Cosatu expects the full force of the law to ensure the accused face appropriate consequences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will also serve as a deterrent that the excessive use of alcohol results in such behaviour, where innocent workers and South Africans are endangered and subsequently end up [in] such situations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, mining company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.co.za\/news\/mining-giant-bars-suspect-viral-east-london-security-guard-assault\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Exxaro Resources confirmed<\/a> that one of the accused was identified as an employee of one of its contractors, Baagi Technology.<\/p>\n<p>Baagi Technology later announced that the employee\u2019s contract had been terminated.<\/p>\n<p>NOW READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.co.za\/news\/south-africa\/politics\/anc-official-accused-of-assault\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ANC official accused of assault<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t<script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The assault case was postponed to February.
