{"id":108812,"date":"2026-02-28T05:03:25","date_gmt":"2026-02-28T05:03:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/108812\/"},"modified":"2026-02-28T05:03:25","modified_gmt":"2026-02-28T05:03:25","slug":"2026-nedbank-cycle-challenge-crowns-new-champions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/108812\/","title":{"rendered":"2026 Nedbank Cycle Challenge crowns new champions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Nedbank Cycle Challenge, popularly described as \u2018the Greatest Ride Under the Sun\u2019 celebrated 40 years with a significant milestone as the organisers reported that over 600 cyclists took part in the 23, 60 and 100 kilometre event.<\/p>\n<p>The race, held at the University of Namibia on 22 February, also saw the crowing of new champions, Alex Miller and Delsia Janse van Vuuren who took top honours after they won the 100 kilometre event.<\/p>\n<p>Namibian Olympic Cyclist, Miller won the men\u2019s competition in a time of 02:23:59, ahead of second-placed Martin Freyer, who clocked 02:23:37. Third place went to Christiaan van der Westhuizen, who finished the race in 02:25:57.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking after the race, Miller applauded the organisers for a well-organised race. \u201cWell done to the organisers for making this race a little bit more interesting. It was nice to have Kupferberg at the end. I hope to see a few more slightly more technical courses, with a bit more corners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am happy that I won Namibia\u2019s biggest road race for the second time in my career,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>In the elite women\u2019s competition. Janse van Vuuren won the race in 03:02:21, ahead of second-placed Rosemarie Thiel, who was a split second behind in 03:02:21. Third place went to Belinda van Rhyn who clocked 03:02:22.<\/p>\n<p>Van Vuuren said her strategy for the race was to break away from the team on the uphill after Avis Bridge, but the wind made it difficult. She also acknowledged Nedbank for organising the Nedbank Cycle Challenge.<\/p>\n<p>The race also saw the return of the coveted Nedbank Kidz Challenge on 21 February. Event organiser, Charmaine Shannon said 35 kids participated in what she termed as successful event.<\/p>\n<p>Leander Borg of LEMA Events said hosting an event of this magnitude, which brought together elite professionals and social riders alike, demanded an incredible collective effort.
