{"id":11467,"date":"2026-01-08T15:49:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T15:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/11467\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T15:49:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T15:49:08","slug":"rdp-remembers-captain-hendjala-as-quirky-unifier-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/11467\/","title":{"rendered":"RDP remembers \u2018Captain\u2019 Hendjala as quirky unifier &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) says its former parliamentarian, Erasmus \u2018Captain\u2019 Hendjala, was always keen on uniting people.<\/p>\n<p>Hendjala died at a hospital at Ongwediva on Friday.<br \/>He was 78.<\/p>\n<p>RDP member of parliament Kennedy Shekupakela says: \u201cCaptain Hendjala was one of the few people who was uniting the people in the party and was always making jokes with all party members. <\/p>\n<p>He will be greatly missed for his teachings and guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He extends his condolences and prayers to Hendjala\u2019s family.<\/p>\n<p>A family representative says a memorial service is scheduled for tomorrow at the Hendjala residence at Oinyikanyika-Olupandu village at Etayi in the Omusati region.<\/p>\n<p>Hendjala will be laid to rest on Saturday at Oinyikanyika cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>He was a former Swapo councillor for the Hakahana constituency (now the Moses \/\/Garo\u00ebb constituency) and Tobias Hainyeko from 1993 until August 2008.<\/p>\n<p>He joined the RDP in 2008 following his abrupt expulsion from Swapo for violating the party\u2019s constitution.<\/p>\n<p>Moses \/\/Garo\u00ebb constituency councillor Stefanus Ndengu of Swapo says while he did not serve with Hendjala, based on what he has heard from the people, Hendjala was a good leader.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was the first constituency councillor at the time when the constituency was known as Hakahana, which was changed to Moses \/\/Garo\u00ebb in 2015,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat later happened was just politics, which is the nature of being a councillor,\u201d Ndengu says.<\/p>\n<p>Hendjala served as the editor-in-chief of the Roman Catholic monthly newsletter, Omukuni from 1977 to 1989 and was a reporter and translator for government newspaper New Era from 1990 to 1991.<\/p>\n<p>He was a Swapo Hakahana district coordinator from 1993 to 1998, and Swapo information secretary, treasurer and chairman in the Brakwater area and Windhoek.<\/p>\n<p>Hendjala was a member of the National Council for the Khomas region from 1993 to 2004, and a member of the parliamentary standing committee on public accounts and economy.<\/p>\n<p>In an age of information overload, Sunrise is The Namibian\u2019s morning briefing, delivered at 6h00 from Monday to Friday.
