{"id":11613,"date":"2026-01-08T17:16:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T17:16:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/11613\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T17:16:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T17:16:10","slug":"protesters-in-south-africa-condemn-us-intervention-in-venezuela-call-for-maduros-release-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/11613\/","title":{"rendered":"Protesters in South Africa condemn US intervention in Venezuela, call for Maduro&#8217;s release"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PRETORIA \u2014 Dozens of people gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in the South African capital Thursday to protest the U.S. intervention in Venezuela and the capture of former president Nicolas Maduro.<\/p>\n<p>The protests were led by members of the South African Communist Party, an ally of the African National Congress, which has denounced U.S President Donald Trump\u2019s actions and called for Maduro\u2019s immediate release.<\/p>\n<p>The demonstrators gathered outside the U.S Embassy in Pretoria with placards condemning Trump\u2019s administration and alleged U.S. intentions to take over Venezuela\u2019s oil reserves.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the placards read \u201cHands Off Venezuela\u201d, \u201cFree President Maduro Now\u201d and \u201cEnd American Imperialism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey want to take this resource (oil reserves) directly under their control, and Donald Trump has not hidden it to the world. There are international platforms for the U.S to raise its grievances instead of the actions we have seen in Venezuela,\u201d said Mukwevho.<\/p>\n<p>The protests follow the South African government\u2019s condemnation of Maduro\u2019s capture and calls for the United Nations to intervene.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa has had tense relations with the U.S. in recent times, with diplomatic rows over Trump\u2019s accusations that South Africa was allowing a \u201cwhite genocide\u201d against the minority white Afrikaner community in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is our commitment to international law and the United Nations charter that informs our deep concern at the actions of the United States in Venezuela, which has undermined the territorial integrity and sovereignty of a UN member state called Venezuela,&#8221; South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said this week.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"People demonstrate outside the U.S. Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa,...\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"770\" height=\"433.125\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767892570_822_image.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>People demonstrate outside the U.S. Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa, Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026.
