(Photo by Saeed KHAN \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" data-v-7257c9c5=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/tts-pre-loader.gif\" alt=\"Vocalize Pre-Player Loader\" style=\"all:unset!important;display:inline!important;\"\/> <\/p>\n<p data-v-7257c9c5=\"\" style=\"font-size:13px;margin-left:20px;\">Audio By Vocalize<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">Kenya will line up with quiet confidence when the<br \/>\nsenior men\u2019s race takes centre stage at the World Athletics Cross Country<br \/>\nChampionships in Tallahassee, USA, just 10 days into the new year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">World half marathon silver medallist Daniel Ebenyo<br \/>\nheadlines a formidable Kenyan squad as the country targets a third consecutive<br \/>\nteam title in what promises to be one of the fiercest distance races of the<br \/>\nseason.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">Fresh from a commanding display at the national<br \/>\ntrials, Ebenyo anchors a balanced and battle-hardened unit built for sustained<br \/>\npressure and championship racing \u2014 traits that have long defined Kenya\u2019s<br \/>\ncross-country dominance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">The 30-year-old leads a cast that includes rising<br \/>\nstar Ishmael Rokitto alongside Edwin Bett, Robert Koech, Weldon Langat,<br \/>\nShadrack Koech, Denis Kemboi and Kevin Chesang, forming a strong eight-man<br \/>\ncontingent for the senior men\u2019s 10km race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">Ebenyo, the 2023 World 10,000m silver medallist and<br \/>\nalso a global silver medallist on the roads, will be eager to return to winning<br \/>\nways after missing both the Paris Olympics and the 2025 World Championships in<br \/>\nTokyo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">\u201cPreparations have been good. I\u2019m happy to be back<br \/>\nand I\u2019m going for the win, but as a team we carry the Kenyan spirit,\u201d said Ebenyo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">Team coach Japhet Kemei echoed that confidence,<br \/>\nsaying preparations have been deliberate and focused.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">\u201cThe team understands what is at stake. The boys are<br \/>\nhealthy, motivated and mentally prepared. Cross country is about teamwork and<br \/>\nwe believe this group can rise to the occasion,\u201d Kemei said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">Kenya last celebrated an individual senior men\u2019s<br \/>\nworld cross-country champion in 2017 in Kampala, when Geoffrey Kamworor stormed<br \/>\nto gold in 28mins 24secs ahead of compatriot Leonard Barsoton (28:36) and<br \/>\nEthiopia\u2019s Abadi Hadis (28:43).<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">This time, Kenya\u2019s biggest threats are expected to<br \/>\ncome from usual suspects \u2014 Uganda and Ethiopia. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">Uganda\u2019s Jacob Kiplimo arrives chasing history,<br \/>\naiming to become only the fourth man to win three consecutive world<br \/>\ncross-country titles a feat previously achieved by John Ngugi, Paul Tergat both<br \/>\nfrom Kenya and Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">The reigning champion has not raced since his<br \/>\nrecord-breaking Chicago Marathon victory, a factor that could work in his<br \/>\nfavour on the demanding Tallahassee course.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">Kiplimo claimed the 2024 title in Belgrade in 28:09<br \/>\nahead of Berihu Aregawi (28:12), with Kenya\u2019s Benson Kiplangat settling for<br \/>\nbronze in 28:14.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">Ethiopia counters once again with Aregawi, a<br \/>\ntwo-time silver medallist behind Kiplimo and still searching for his first<br \/>\nglobal gold. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">He is backed by a deep supporting cast including<br \/>\nBereket Nega, Tadese Worku and Hagos Eyob, giving Ethiopia strong team<br \/>\ncredentials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">While much of the global spotlight will focus on the<br \/>\nKiplimo\u2013Aregawi rivalry, Kenya\u2019s strength lies in numbers and collective<br \/>\nexecution. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">With the Tallahassee course expected to reward<br \/>\nstrength as much as speed, Kenya\u2019s ability to apply relentless pressure in the<br \/>\nclosing stages could once again prove decisive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">Elsewhere, a strong international field includes<br \/>\nFrance\u2019s Jimmy Gressier, Spain\u2019s Thierry Ndikumwenayo, Canada\u2019s Moh Ahmed and<br \/>\nSouth Africa\u2019s Adriaan Wildschutt, underlining the depth and quality of the<br \/>\nrace.<\/p>\n<p>Mixed relay dominance<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">Defending champions Kenya will be vying for a fourth<br \/>\ntitle in the mixed relay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">Kenya has won all but one title in this discipline<br \/>\nsince it was introduced to the World Cross in 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">Reynold Cheruiyot, Kyumbe Munguti and Purity<br \/>\nChepkirui formed three-quarters of Kenya\u2019s victorious team in 2024 and will be<br \/>\nback in action in Florida, keen to add another gold medal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">Cheruiyot, the world 1500m bronze medallist, won the<br \/>\nNational\u2019s 2km trial race in October, finishing ahead of Munguti, who also<br \/>\nclaimed mixed relay gold for Kenya in 2023. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">Chepkirui, the 2021 world U20 1500m champion, was a<br \/>\nconvincing winner of the women\u2019s trial race. Winfred Mbithe, who won mixed<br \/>\nrelay gold in 2017 and bronze in 2019, is also part of the squad, as she gears<br \/>\nup for a strong comeback following maternity break.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">Ethiopia, winners in 2019, remain the only other<br \/>\nnation to have claimed a world cross-country mixed relay title. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">Although their squad has been affected by visa<br \/>\nissues, they have assembled a competitive line-up that includes 2022 world<br \/>\nindoor 1500m bronze medallist Hirut Meshesha, African 10,000m bronze medallist<br \/>\nGela Hambese and 2021 world U20 1500m silver medallist Wegene Adisu.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">Two of the athletes who helped Australia claim<br \/>\nbronze on home soil in Bathurst three years ago \u2013 Olympic 1500m silver<br \/>\nmedallist Jessica Hull and Commonwealth 1500m champion Ollie Hoare \u2013 return for<br \/>\nrelay duty as part of a full-strength team. Linden Hall, Sarah Billings and Jack<br \/>\nAnstey complete Australia\u2019s relay pool.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">Great Britain and Northern Ireland, bronze<br \/>\nmedallists two years ago in Belgrade, have also named several returning<br \/>\nmembers. Thomas Keen, Adam Fogg and Alexandra Millard \u2013 all of whom stood on<br \/>\nthe podium in 2024 \u2013 are joined in the squad by world road mile silver<br \/>\nmedallist Callum Elson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; line-height: 107%;\">Sage Hurta-Klecker, who finished fifth in the 800m<br \/>\nat last year\u2019s World Championships, is the stand-out name on the US team.
