{"id":12143,"date":"2026-01-08T23:32:57","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T23:32:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/12143\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T23:32:57","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T23:32:57","slug":"pope-leo-xiv-erects-bariadi-catholic-diocese-in-tanzania-appoints-pioneer-local-ordinary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/12143\/","title":{"rendered":"Pope Leo XIV Erects Bariadi Catholic Diocese in Tanzania, Appoints Pioneer Local Ordinary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aciafrica.org\/author\/68\/silas-isenjia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                        <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Silas Isenjia\" class=\"author-image m-0 mr-4\" height=\"48\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767915177_903_untitled-design-73_1687505889.png\" width=\"48\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n                    <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-info\">Bariadi, 08 January, 2026 \/  7:18 pm (ACI Africa).<\/p>\n<p>Pope Leo XIV has erected the <a href=\"https:\/\/gcatholic.org\/dioceses\/diocese\/bari4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Catholic Diocese of Bariadi<\/a> as the <a href=\"https:\/\/tec.or.tz\/index.php\/archdioceses-of-tanznia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">36th Episcopal See<\/a> in Tanzania, carved out from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholic-hierarchy.org\/diocese\/dshin.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Catholic Diocese of Shinyanga<\/a> of the East African nation.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/press.vatican.va\/content\/salastampa\/it\/bollettino\/pubblico\/2026\/01\/08\/0020\/00041.html#tanzania\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Holy See Press<\/a> Office\u2019s Thursday, January 8 publication announcing the erection of Tanzania\u2019s newest Catholic Diocese, the Holy Father also appointed Bishop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholic-hierarchy.org\/bishop\/blyimo.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Prosper Baltazar Lyimo<\/a>, who has been serving as Auxiliary Bishop of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholic-hierarchy.org\/diocese\/darus.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arusha Archdiocese<\/a>, the pioneer Local Ordinary of Bariadi Diocese.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The newly established Bariadi Diocese becomes the eighth Suffragan Diocese of the Metropolitan See of Mwanza alongside Bukoba, Bunda, Geita, Kayanga, Musoma, Rulenge-Ngara, and Shinyanga.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Vatican January 2026 statistics, the newly erected Tanzanian Diocese that measures 16,638 km\u00b2 starts with 366,000 Catholics out of 1,221,540 people, representing 29.96 percent of the total population of the territory of the Episcopal See.<\/p>\n<p>Set to temporarily have St. John the Evangelist in the city of Bariadi as its Cathedral, awaiting the completion of the Church dedicated to St. Luke, the newly erected Diocese has 19 Parishes, 43 Priests, 35 of them Diocesan, and eight members of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitaconsacrata.va\/en.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Institutes of Consecrated Life and the Societies of Apostolic Life<\/a> (ICLSAL).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Bariadi, 08 January, 2026 \/ 7:18 pm (ACI Africa).
