{"id":12238,"date":"2026-01-09T00:52:17","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T00:52:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/12238\/"},"modified":"2026-01-09T00:52:17","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T00:52:17","slug":"nw-residents-brave-sewage-running-outside-their-homes-health-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/africa\/12238\/","title":{"rendered":"NW residents brave sewage running outside their homes, health concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some frustrated residents from the Boitekong township are pleading for the African National Congress to intervene on their behalf with sewage running endlessly outside their homes.<\/p>\n<p>The residents said they have not received assistance from the Rustenburg Municipality which is governed through an African National Congress (ANC)-led coalition.<\/p>\n<p>ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa and some of the party\u2019s leadership have been in Rustenburg on Wednesday, engaging with community members ahead of the organisation\u2019s January 8 celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>Green, thick liquid sewage flows in front of John Sithole\u2019s corrugated iron home in Boitekong.<\/p>\n<p>While Sithole has dug ditches to try and steer it away from his home, the large volume of sewage makes this difficult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou see there is currently no water so there isn\u2019t a lot of sewage flowing but when the water returns, this area will be full of sewage. I am not sure what to hope for because you cannot live without water, but you also can\u2019t live like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Residents said they hope the visit of the party\u2019s top leadership willresult in some action towards their grievances.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"John Sithole, a resident of Boitekong Extension 8, has sewage running in front of his home on 7 January 2026. Picture: Thabiso Goba\/EWN<\/p>\n<p>RESIDENTS FLAG HEALTH CONCERNS DUE TO SEWAGE SPILLAGE<\/p>\n<p>Some residents in the township have health concerns following a sewage spill that\u2019s been flowing outside their homes since December 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They said their complaints to the municipality have fallen on deaf ears.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For Modiri Motimo, getting out of his home means having to carefully jump over the large, green puddle of sewage that has settled in front of his yard.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis situation has really negatively affected us. We don\u2019t have fresh air. Our children cannot play outside freely. We didn\u2019t get to enjoy our December.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another resident, John Mashaba, said he has reported the sewage spill to no avail.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe children are really struggling because when it\u2019s raining it becomes a problem for them to get to school. They miss out on school and fail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like most parts in the North West, Boitekong overwhelmingly votes for the ANC with all three of its wards represented by an ANC councillor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Despite the area currently experiencing a water outage, sewage still flows outside Sithole\u2019s home. <\/p>\n<p>He said when the water returns, the volume of the sewage flow will increase. We didn\u2019t enjoy the Christmas holiday.
